So you’re considering becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)? For people searching for a fulfilling, compassionate career helping individuals become the best version of themselves, look no further! RBTs work directly with clients to teach new skills, play games, and practice socializing. In this article, we will walk you through how to become an RBT.

This article is brought to you by our very own educational/training wing: CoachABA! No matter what step in your journey or where you are in the world: CoachABA is the place to launch your career in ABA.

What do RBTs do?

RBTs work in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) uses data-verified science to help increase positive behavior that improves an individuals’ life, while decreasing inappropriate behaviors that might be hindering a person.  While ABA is most commonly associated with children on the Autism spectrum, ABA therapy is effective for individuals of all ages and ability levels. ABA is a person-centered therapy, meaning that it is completely tailored to the goals and needs of every individual.

ABA therapy is led by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Before any therapy begins, the BCBA will perform a comprehensive assessment of their client. During this period the BCBA identifies what behaviors are holding a person back, what skills they need help developing, and how their environment shapes their behavior. They will also interview caregivers and other community members about the client’s behavior. Using the information gathered during assessment, the BCBA writes a Behavior Support Plan (BSP) that outlines a strategy for increasing positive behaviors and reducing harmful ones.

After the Assessment by the BCBA, RBTs are in charge of following the written plan. RBTs work directly with clients on their target skills. Daily session activities might include games, puzzles, learning tools, or sensory activities depending on the goals of the assessment. With a good RBT, these activities should look and feel like play, even if there are learning objectives involved. Because all ABA therapy is tailored to the needs of each individual, this therapy can take place in any number of settings including at home, in schools, in clinics, and more. RBTs collect data at every session, and report changes, concerns, and progress to their clinical supervisors.

Do RBTs only work with children?

As we’ve already addressed in this article, ABA isn’t just for kids. However there is a high demand for ABA services for children and young adults. If you love working with kids, you’ll find that working as an RBT provides you with many unique opportunities to make a real difference in their lives. Contrastingly to many other positions where you work with kids, RBT work is all about one-on-one care.

Starting a Career as an RBT

How do you become an RBT? The RBT certification is a paraprofessional certification governed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). While you need this certification to work as an RBT, it is common to accept a position at a company before obtaining this certification. After hiring, the company will provide training as part of the Onboarding process. You will also be connected with a BCBA who will be able to sign off on your competencies.

The only qualifications to become an RBT are:

  • a high school diploma or equivalent
  • being 18 years or older
  • passing a criminal background and abuse registry check

To work as an RBT, you must complete your 40-Hour RBT training course. Typically, this will be part od your training/onboarding at a new agency. In the 40-Hour RBT Training course, participants learn about the basis of ABA therapy, ethical considerations, how to collect data, and the ins and outs of behavior intervention.

After the course, you must pass the RBT competency exam. This exam is performed by a BCBA, and usually involves some form of roleplay or working with an actual client. The BCBA will measure the RBT’s ability to perform common therapy tasks accurately and appropriately. Once the BCBA has determined that the participant has all the necessary competencies to work one-on-one with clients, you are ready to move on to the next step.

The next step is to apply to take the RBT exam by applying to the BACB. You will need to submit your training certifications, competency assessment, and background check. Then, you will take the RBT exam, testing your knowledge on everything you have learned.

You will get your results immediately after taking the exam. With hard work and preparation – you’re well on your way to a rewarding and impactful career!

Career Path for RBTs

The position of an RBT is a rewarding and worthwhile career. However, those looking to advance further  can look into advancing education opportunities within the field.

Some ABA companies offer an advanced position called Lead RBT. This is someone who has excelled as an RBT, who has taken on additional administrative opportunities. This might include mentorship, scheduling, paperwork, or other operational duties.

If working as an RBT ignites a passion in you, you may also consider pursuing your BCBA certification. The Board Certified Behavior Analyst certification is a Masters level certification. BCBAs are in high demand in the United States and the certification opens the door for lots of lucrative job opportunities. BCBAs also have a lot of career flexibility, allowing them to choose when and how they want to work. While RBTs work one-on-one with clients day to day, BCBAs take a zoomed out approach to write plans, collect data, and help individuals be the best they can be.
